Born in Rio de Janeiro, Guilherme Barroso has an intense international career as a lute player, teacher and researcher.

He regularly performs with groups such as astrophil&stella (Johanna Bartz), Ensemble Domus Artis, Sollazzo Ensemble (Anna Danilevskaia), Ensemble La Boz Galana (Sebastián León), Ensemble Concerto Scirocco (Giulia Genini), Ensemble Elyma and Ensemble Ébalides (Gabriel Garrido), Ensemble Arte Mínima (Pedro Sousa Silva), Galimatias Baroque Ensemble (Ivan Rodriguez) and others throughout Europe and South America.

Recent reviews have classified his performances as virtuosic, intelligent and expressive, and he has won prizes in competitions in Germany, France and Portugal.

Guilherme teaches lute and bass continuo at the Lisbon Superior Music School (ESML) and is a PhD student in musicology at the University of Coimbra, where he is researching the processes of learning and teaching counterpoint in Portugal in the 16th and 17th centuries.

His academic background includes a Master's degree in Lute Pedagogy from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, supervised by Peter Croton, a Master's degree in Lute Performance from the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, where he was a student of Eduardo Egüez, and a Bachelor's degree in Early Music/Lute from the Porto School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE), where he studied with Ronaldo Lopes. He also holds a Bachelor's degree in Conducting (Valéria Matos) and a Master's degree in Historical Musicology (Prof. Dr. Marcelo Fagerlande) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Guilherme is responsible for the artistic direction of the MVSICA CORDIS Egerkingen concert series, together with Márton Borsanyi and Katharina von Arx. The series, dedicated to early music, welcomes renowned artists from all over Europe every year.

He is also director of the Kirchenchor St. Martin Egerkingen and a music teacher at the Musikschule Gäu, both in Switzerland.
